Belmont 16s Sailing Club Turns Blue for Prostate Cancer Awareness
In partnership with the Hunter Prostate Cancer Alliance (HPCA) and Tooheys, the Club will light up blue each night between Monday, 2 September and Friday, 6 September with a ‘Lager & Legends: Cheers for a Cause’ event set to take place on the final evening.
The event will feature a special raffle, with two lucky winners receiving double Diamond Seats to the NRL Grand Final with accommodation in a 4-star hotel for a night, all while supporting this crucial cause.
“We believe in giving back to our community in meaningful ways,” said CEO of Belmont 16s Scott Williams.
“Lighting the Club in blue for a week and hosting events like ‘Lager & Legends’ is not just about raising funds — it is about raising awareness of prostate cancer and the importance of early detection.
“This is about supporting men and their families in our community during challenging times.”
Confirmed guests of the event include former Newcastle Knights player and coach Michael Hagan, and former Balmain Tigers player Garry Leo OAM. Both have been diagnosed with prostate cancer in the past.
“Over my NRL career, I’ve coached and played with a lot of tough men. No matter how fit or healthy you think you are, there’s nothing tough about ignoring your health,” Hagan said.
“When I was just 44 years old, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Fortunately, due to regular PSA tests from my GP, it was detected early, and my life was saved.”
Leo agrees with that sentiment.
“I’ve played footy with blokes who have taken hit after hit, playing through blood, sweat, and broken bones,” he said.
“Proper hard men. But prostate cancer doesn’t care how tough you are. When I was 61 years old, I was diagnosed.
“Today, I want men throughout the Hunter to start taking prostate cancer seriously. Talk to your GP about making the PSA test part of your regular check-up. After all, tough men aren’t afraid of a little prick!”
Tickets to the raffle are available online at www.16s.com.au.
$1 from every Lion (Tooheys) beer purchased will be donated to the HPCA, and guests at the venue will have the chance to win an exclusive Tooheys hamper.
