Bowling Club Inspires the Next Generation with Rookie Rollers Program
South Tamworth Bowling Club is bringing a fresh energy to the greens, inviting local children to give lawn bowls a try through its fun, family-friendly Rookie Rollers program.
The program, developed by Bowls Australia, is designed to make the sport accessible to children using specially created soft bowls and activity stations that teach the fundamentals of the game.
South Tamworth Bowling Club runs the sessions every Friday evening for $10 per child, which covers coaching from trained volunteers, skill games, prizes and a kid’s meal.
Club CEO Matthew Hill says the initiative has quickly become one of the Club’s most popular weekly events.
“We’re averaging around 25 kids each week, with families turning out together to enjoy a great night on the green,” says Matthew.
“It’s a really safe and user-friendly way for kids to learn and we’re seeing brothers, sisters and cousins all having a go together.”
The Club’s volunteers deliver up to 25 different activities each week, all focused on developing coordination and introducing young participants to the skills needed to play bowls.
“For $10, the kids get a full session, a meal and a great experience — it’s not about profit for us,” Matthew says.
“We just want to grow the game and give families a reason to get involved at the Club.”
Running until the end of February, the program is already helping the Club foster a new generation of bowlers. Matthew says the initiative has also brought a sense of community and energy to Friday nights at the Club.
“It’s a great way to show that bowls is for everyone — it’s inclusive, fun and a sport kids can play for life,” he says.
“Our volunteers love it, the families love it and there’s a real buzz around the Club each week.”
While themed nights like a Halloween edition add extra fun for participants, Matthew says the real focus is on creating an affordable pathway for young locals to learn and enjoy the game.
