Cabra-Vale Diggers Acts as Evacuation Centre Amid Storms & Crane Collapse
Cabra-Vale Diggers acted swiftly on Wednesday evening to ensure the safety of their community after a nearby crane collapsed during the severe thunderstorm.
At approximately 6pm, Cabra-Vale Diggers General Manager Michael Foulkes, received a call from David Niven, the General Manager of Fairfield City Council, seeking assistance following a crane incident caused by a lightning strike during severe thunderstorms earlier that day.
The crane, situated in Fairfield, had partially collapsed, raising concerns from the police about the safety of residents in nearby units. In response to this urgent situation, the Club immediately mobilised its resources to establish an evacuation centre.
The auditorium was transformed into a space equipped with a tea and coffee station, along with provisions such as blankets, pillows and meals to support the affected residents until more permanent accommodation could be arranged.
David Niven specifically requested the Club's support in evacuating residents, and from 6pm until 11.30pm, the Club played a pivotal role in providing transportation for the affected individuals.
The collaborative efforts of Cabra-Vale Diggers, Fairfield City Council, and the on-site evacuation management team ensured the sourcing of suitable accommodation within the district for those impacted.
In addition to the crucial support offered during the evacuation process, the Club extended its assistance by supplying food and refreshments to those affected.
While the numbers may not have been substantial, the Club, once again, demonstrated its commitment to community wellbeing by promptly activating as an evacuation centre in response to this emergency.
Cabra-Vale Diggers has become known as the local evacuation centre for all emergency services during any local disaster.
