ClubsNSW Team Complete Aboriginal Cultural Awareness Course
ClubsNSW team members have taken a significant step in understanding First Nations customs by completing the Yilabara Aboriginal Cultural Awareness course.
This initiative reflects a broader commitment to inclusivity and respect for Indigenous cultures within the club industry, with the Yilabara course being specifically designed to enhance understanding of the rich and diverse heritage of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Staff learnt about traditional culture, how it was affected by the arrival of European settlers, the historical events over the last 250 years that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have been subject to, and the movements that have led to change over the last 50 years.
Upon successfully completing the course, participants were awarded a digital badge. Each graduate can showcase this badge on various platforms, including email signatures, social media channels and digital resumes.
Participants completed three two-hour webinars or a 6.5-hour face-to-face workshop, gaining knowledge on the history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples to better understand present day challenges and trends.
“I found the training insightful and thought provoking,” says Daniel Brian, ClubsNSW Member Services Executive.
“It gave me an understanding of beliefs, thoughts, cultural loss and feelings of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people that is not advertised or available in other mediums.”
The course guided the team in acknowledging and respecting the cultural heritage of First Nations Peoples, which can lead to more thoughtful interactions and an enhanced patron experience. The initiative is also in line with broader cultural recognition efforts across Australia.
Many industries are recognising the need to better engage with Indigenous communities in a meaningful way.
“This course was exceptionally well-organised, informative and engaging,” says Nektaria Halatsis, ClubsNSW Senior Legal Counsel.
“Jamie was a fantastic facilitator, bringing deep knowledge and creating a welcoming, collaborative space for learning.”
