Dapto Leagues Club Celebrates 70 Years with New Mural Project
Dapto Leagues Club has kicked off its 70th anniversary celebrations in style, launching an expression of interest for a major mural to adorn Bong Bong Road.
Key Points
- Dapto Leagues Club marks 70 years with a community mural initiative
- The Canary, the Club’s iconic logo, will feature in the design
- Local artists invited to submit expressions of interest
- Mural to be located on Bong Bong Road, visible to the community
- Winner to be selected by the Club’s board at its 30 September meeting.
CEO David Hiscox says the idea stemmed from the Club’s marketing team, who wanted to create a lasting piece of art that reflects Dapto’s sporting, social, and community legacy.
“Obviously the 70th is a significant milestone for the Club and the team put together a really comprehensive plan of events to celebrate,” David told ABC Illawarra Drive host, Lindsay McDougall.
“We’ve already showcased incredible bits of history inside the Club, and the mural is another way to capture our heritage and connection to the community.”
The mural will celebrate Dapto Leagues’ long-standing ties to local sport, entertainment, and community life.
David says the Club is open to interpretation, with only one non-negotiable for artists: “Our logo has always been the Canary – the Dapto Canary – and that must be included. Beyond that, we don’t have any preconceived ideas. We want something that encapsulates our history and community spirit.”
The mural is expected to stand around three metres high, making it a prominent feature for anyone travelling along Bong Bong Road or Marshall Street.
Expressions of interest closed on 31 August. Submissions will be reviewed by the Club’s board, with the winner to be decided at its meeting on 30 September.
David says the project is an exciting chance for a local artist to leave their mark on the Illawarra landscape.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity for someone locally to showcase their talent and become part of our story,” he says.
“Murals become part of the fabric of a community, and this will be no different.”
