The Doylo’s Loyal CEO Chalks up 40 Years of Service
The Doylo’s CEO Darren Thornton has notched up an incredible feat, recently completing 40 years of service at the Club.
Darren’s journey began with the Club at age 16 as a greenkeeper, before starting bar work once he was 18 and then becoming CEO 31 years later.
Darren said the 40 years have flown by.
“It doesn't seem like 40 years, it's been really good,” Darren said.
“It has certainly had its ups and downs. But it's been a great journey seeing the Club go from strength to strength.
“I was lucky enough to be promoted several times and was able to try out different roles to eventually becoming CEO.”
Naturally, Darren has seen a lot of changes during his 40 years with the Club.
“The professionalism of the Board and the whole Club has come a long way,” he said.
“It's changed from back in the old days where anything would go, but now we are run like a real business. Before it was just like an old bowling club and it was very different.”
Darren said his proudest moment was getting important developments over the line.
“Getting our Club rezoned to develop on the land next to us was a huge moment that was 20 years in the making.
When asked if he would encourage young people to consider a career in the club industry, his answer was clear.
“Yes! It's a great industry to be involved in. There’s a lot of challenges that keep things interesting too,” he said.
“You don’t have to be stuck in one position. There's a lot of opportunities to progress up the ladder.
Darren concluded that he appreciated all the help and support he had received over his time.
“I couldn’t have been here this long without great people around me. The current board that I have now has remained the same for 10 years and they are brilliant.”
ClubsNSW CEO Rebecca Riant said 40 years of service was a remarkable achievement.
“Sincerest congratulations on 40 years and what an outstanding contribution you've made to our industry starting in 1984 as an apprentice green keeper, to barman, all the way through till today.” Ms Riant said.
“Even after becoming CEO in 2007, your contribution to not only Doylos itself but your greater community has been phenomenal through acquisition of property and development of community.
“We're have sincere appreciation for your contribution and on behalf of ClubsNSW we are so proud to be associated with you. Congratulations again and really looking forward to what you're able to achieve in 2024 on behalf of your club's members and the Central Coast community.”
