Historic Gym Comes Full Circle at Bathurst RSL Club
Bathurst RSL Club has brought one of the city’s most recognisable fitness facilities back home, announcing the purchase of Cityfit Fitness Club and completing a 50-year connection with the iconic gym and pool.
The acquisition marks a significant milestone in the long-standing relationship between Bathurst RSL Club and Cityfit, a connection that dates back to the construction of the original gym and pool facilities in 1975.
The facilities were built by the Club before being sold in the 1980s, later repurchased as a building asset in 2018. With the acquisition of the Cityfit business itself, the Club once again owns both the facility and its operation.
Established in 1986, Cityfit is one of Bathurst’s longest-running fitness providers and has played a central role in the health and wellbeing of the local community. For generations of residents, it has been a place to learn to swim, take part in group fitness classes, train with personal trainers and stay active through every stage of life.
Bathurst RSL Club CEO Peter Sargent says the purchase was a natural fit and had been part of the Club’s long-term vision.
“We’ve had a close connection with the gym since it was built in the 1970s. With a great team of professional trainers, a huge choice of group fitness classes and a successful Swim School, bringing Cityfit back under the Bathurst RSL Club banner just made sense,” he says.
Mr Sargent says the Club is investing in significant upgrades to ensure the facility continues to meet the needs of the community.
“We’re investing in new air conditioning, improvements to the pool, a new cardio studio floor and new cardio equipment, ensuring Cityfit continues to deliver outstanding fitness services to the people of Bathurst,” he says.
Bathurst RSL Club President Ian Miller says the shared community focus of both organisations underpinned the decision.
“These two brands align so well. Both have an important connection to the community and really mean something to Bathurst,” he says.
The acquisition strengthens Bathurst RSL Club’s commitment to diversifying its business while securing the long-term future of one of the region’s most established fitness venues, keeping it locally owned and managed for generations to come.
