Lismore City Bowling Club Revives Beloved Local Markets
The beloved tradition of the Lismore markets has been revived thanks to Lismore City Bowling Club, which is transforming one of its bowling greens into a vibrant marketplace each month.
The concept of the markets was devised amid the loss of the former much-loved car boot markets which were discontinued several years ago.
The idea for the revival came from the wife of the Club’s secretary manager Mark Pepper — Sharon Pepper — who is the brainchild of the new and improved event.
“It’s very much in the same theme as the car boot markets,” Sharon told ABC Radio North Coast’s breakfast show.
“All the different varieties of things — fruit trees, handcrafted items, crocheted goods, facial products, the honey stall, which is always popular.
“There’s just so much variety, and people are really enjoying it.”
The Club can host between 45 and 50 stalls on its social green, creating plenty of space for local vendors and shoppers alike.
“We’ve had three markets now and they’ve been received really well,” said Sharon.
Adding to the atmosphere, the markets feature live buskers, offering music and entertainment for all ages.
“We had two buskers there last Sunday and we’re going to continue with that. It gives local performers a chance to earn a few extra dollars,” Sharon said.
Food and drink are also a big drawcard.
“The Club does an egg and bacon roll and sausage sandwiches, and we’ve got food trucks — Thai, Italian, plus the Dark Horse Coffee van. There’s something for everyone,” said Sharon.
The Club has ensured the event is weather-proof, with marquees and indoor spaces ready if needed.
“It’s a place for people to come together, catch up, and support locals. That’s what makes it special,” said Sharon.
The markets will take place on the third Sunday of every month.
