Narooma Golf Club Celebrates a Cherished New Year’s Eve Tradition
For more than four decades, Narooma Golf Club has proudly hosted one of the South Coast’s most cherished New Year’s Eve traditions, bringing families and friends together to celebrate the year’s end.
Each year on 31 December, thousands of locals and visitors gather on the grounds of Narooma Golf Club to farewell the year in a relaxed, family-friendly setting. Picnic rugs are spread across the grass, children play freely, and a sense of anticipation builds as the sun sets over the coast.
The New Year’s Eve fireworks have become deeply woven into the town’s identity. Many of the Club’s longest-serving staff remember attending the event as children themselves, standing alongside parents and grandparents in the same place. While the exact origins of the tradition are unclear, it has long been a constant in Narooma’s community life, passed down from generation to generation.
Importantly, the event has never been about profit. The Club hosts the fireworks as a genuine gift to the community, reflecting its commitment to creating shared experiences and lasting memories for locals and visitors alike.
Adding to the strong community focus, volunteer firefighters from Dalmeny, Narooma and Kianga are welcomed each year, running a sausage sizzle to raise funds for their vital work. Their involvement highlights the spirit of generosity and support that defines the region.
When the fireworks finally light up the night sky, there is a moment of collective stillness as the crowd looks on. Smiles, laughter and wide-eyed wonder are shared across generations, reinforcing why the tradition continues to hold such special meaning.
Narooma Golf Club says it is proud to continue hosting the New Year’s Eve fireworks and looks forward to welcoming the community back year after year to celebrate together and welcome in the new year.
