New Kid on the Block
Canterbury League Club’s newest establishment — Bartega — seamlessly blends the glamour and sophistication of a high-end cocktail bar with the warmth of a neighbourhood gem, offering the luxury of something you’d ordinarily find in the CBD, but much closer to home.
Key Points
- Canterbury League Club has opened a new cocktail bar ‘Bartega’
- The bar offers a CBD-style cocktail and dining offering
- Bartega is headed up by Tony Rudolph, who worked on Peter Gilmore’s Bennelong and most recently Crown Sydney’s Woodcut
Bartega heralds a vibrant resurgence of nightlife for southwest Sydney, with the artisanal venue guided by Bar Manager Tony Rudolph.
Tony is a seasoned expert who has honed his craft in some of Sydney’s most prestigious establishments, including Peter Gilmore’s Bennelong and most recently Crown Sydney’s Woodcut.
Tony incorporates his passion for experimenting and combining flavours into the Bartega beverage menu.
“It’s a playful yet refined approach to both classics and bespoke concoctions,” says Tony.
One standout cocktail, the Jin Cha, is a mesmerising blend of Roku Gin, matcha, chartreuse, yuzu and honey, served in a traditional matcha bowl.
Beyond the bar, Bartega’s canapé-style menu offers a tantalising balance between bold and familiar. Anticipated crowd-pleasers include sesame-coated yellowfin tuna, oven-baked brie with organic honeycomb, pistachio and poppyseed lavosh, along with succulent pork belly bao buns served with Asian herbs, pickled daikon and chilli caramel.
The venue’s aesthetic interior was designed by award-winning Altis Architecture and masterfully blends unique and locally sourced vintage pieces with a variety of styles, textures and colours. A spectacular marble bar forms the centrepiece of the space, complete with gleaming brass finishes and an expansive al fresco balcony that overlooks lush gardens and a spectacular waterfall feature.
An intimate space that can seat around 60 guests, Bartega is the crown jewel in the Club's multi-million-dollar redevelopment.
CEO Greg Pickering says they had a vision to redefine people's limited perception of southwest Sydney.
"Bartega is more than just another cocktail bar. Southwest Sydney has a lot to offer as a destination, and we're hoping to showcase this, as well as offer a luxurious and accessible atmosphere for locals,” he says.
Greg says the cocktail bar, which officially opened on 9 June, had been in the works for many years.
“The concept behind opening Bartega was crystallised thanks to the feedback from members and guests via a Club-wide survey and several focus groups that we ran in October last year.
“Based on the feedback received, we recognised that there was an opportunity to open an upmarket cocktail bar to cater to our local area. Since the pandemic, I think people are more inclined to venture closer to home and not necessarily travel to the city for a relaxing night out with friends.”
