NSW Masonic Club Ready for Remembrance Day
When the calendar lands on the eleventh of the eleventh, and the clock strikes 11:00, Australian clubs, schools and many workplaces pause to commemorate Remembrance Day.
It’s a date known worldwide as Armistice Day, marking the official end to World War I in 1918. For the NSW Masonic Club, which has been accommodating and serving veterans since 1893, it is one of the two most important dates on their calendar.
The location of the NSW Masonic Club’s permanent home, in the heart of the Sydney CBD at 169 Castlereagh Street, was built by Freemasons following World War I between 1925 and 1927.
War broke out again just over a decade later, and many members of the Club went to battle in World War II.
Fast forward almost a century and countless members have served in all wars across the world and the Freemasons looked after their families during and after those times. The names of those who served in WWI and WWII are recorded in a special leather-bound book found on the Club’s ground floor for all to see, along with a war memorial.
Each year, the Club holds special services and a march on both ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day.
The Masonic RSL Sub Branch forms up on Castlereagh Street and is led in by a piper from the Pipes & Drums of the City of Sydney. A wreath is laid to the fallen and the service is followed by the Last Post.
The NSW Masonic Club invites all to attend the service on Monday, 11 November 2024, followed by a lunch in Cellos Grand Dining Room.
Seats are available at $80 per person by phoning Rita on 9284 1006. Bookings are required by Friday, 8 November 2024.
