South Coast Clubs Hit by Severe Thunderstorms
Floodwaters from a widespread low-pressure system on Wednesday, 29 November caused flash flooding on the South Coast, affecting Lake Conjola Bowling Club among other businesses.
A watch and act alert was issued just after 7am on Wednesday for Lake Conjola following very heavy rainfall overnight. In Jervis Bay, 218.8 millimetres was recorded with a further 194.2mm in Ulladulla.
Lake Conjola Bowling Club Chairman Bob O’Brien said the rain came fast and fierce.
“The water kept coming and eventually it started dripping through the roof. By 5pm we actually had to close the Club,” Bob said.
“Not only was the rain getting worse, but half our staff couldn’t even get to the Club.
“The water from the mountains and Lake Conjola overflowing meant it began flooding quickly. The bridge to get to the Club was completely covered with the banks overflowing. You couldn’t get a car through most of the roads.
“Fortunately, the water has gone down now.”
On Thursday, Bob said the Club has builders to come in to assess the damage and the roof will require some patching up.
