South Coast Clubs Unite to Support Colleague and Raise Funds for Charity
Clubs across the NSW Far South Coast have come together in a powerful show of solidarity and support for one of their own—John Holt, General Manager of Mollymook Golf Club—by raising over $3000 for the youth cancer charity, Canteen.
The fundraising initiative took place as part of the seasonal ClubsNSW and Club Managers’ Association Australia (CMAA) management meetings.
John recently returned to the club industry following a long and challenging cancer battle, with unwavering support from his industry peers at Narooma, Moruya, Tomakin, Batemans Bay and Ulladulla.
“It came from nowhere,” says John. “Mid 50s, strong, active, no history of health issues — and then one day I realised the sore throat wasn’t going away. Within weeks, the diagnosis was confirmed and life completely changed.
“I feel blessed to have had so much support and doubly blessed to have come through with a good medical outcome.
“It’s a nasty journey, but the family, friends and the magnificent cancer care system made everything so much easier to get through.”
Throughout his treatment, John was supported not only by his family and friends but also by the wider club industry, who rallied together to assist in every way—including providing transport for 38 separate radiation and chemotherapy appointments.
In recognition of the profound impact of cancer on young people and their families, John chose Canteen as the recipient of the fundraising efforts.
Canteen supports young people aged 12–25 who are impacted by cancer, either through their own diagnosis or that of a loved one.
Hosting the fundraiser on behalf of the regional clubs, CMAA Regional President and Catalina Club General Manager, Guy Chapman, says he was proud of the industry’s efforts to support John and his selected charity.
“Within ClubsNSW and the CMAA, we have a strong fundraising ethic at our regional meetings,” he says.
“It’s always hugely rewarding to raise funds among our management teams, especially for a cause chosen by our esteemed colleagues.
“We’re delighted to have John back among us and proud to donate over $3000 to Canteen on his behalf.”
Canteen’s Amy Rankin expressed heartfelt appreciation: “Thank you to everyone at Catalina Club, Narooma Golf Club, Club Narooma, Club Dalmeny, Moruya Golf Club, Tomakin Club, Batemans Bay Soldiers and Milton Ulladulla ExServos for choosing Canteen.
“Your donation will make a real difference to young people affected by cancer—both in your community and across the country.”
Canteen offers a range of free support services, including online counselling, therapeutic camps, and short-stay programs for young people and their families—ensuring no young person faces cancer alone.
