ILGA Encourages Venues to Showcase Positive Culture in Applications

In the recent article, ILGA Chairperson Caroline Lamb noted that regulatory applications often focus heavily on technical compliance, but may not always capture the broader role venues play in supporting their communities. ILGA has indicated it welcomes information that demonstrates how venues contribute positively to community life, support patrons, manage risk and build social connections. 

These comments follow positive engagement between ILGA Board members and the club industry, including attendance at Purple Friday events hosted by Revesby Workers' Club and the Clubs & Community Awards Night. These events gave ILGA Board members direct insight into how clubs support their communities and promote responsible venue operations. ILGA has since recognised the role clubs play in local communities, including the practical support they provide to people affected by domestic and family violence.

What ILGA Is Looking For

According to ILGA, applications can be strengthened by providing a more complete picture of the club, including:

• How the proposal aligns with the club's long-term vision and strategic objectives.
• The role the club plays in supporting and connecting its local community.
• How directors, senior management and key staff provide leadership and oversight, including the steps they take to minimise harm associated with liquor and gaming.
• Real-world examples of how the club responds to vulnerable patrons and implements responsible gambling practices in support of its Gaming Plan of Management.
• Where an application forms part of a broader development, how it will deliver community benefits and enhance facilities for members and guests.
• Programs, services and activities that help address community needs, strengthen social connections and support community wellbeing.
• Examples of how the club has supported its community during challenging times or contributed to local resilience
• The range of recreation, entertainment, sporting and social opportunities provided by the club beyond gaming and liquor operations.

What Does This Mean for Clubs?

Clubs have a long history of supporting local communities through sport, recreation, social connection, volunteering, emergency relief, community partnerships and responsible service initiatives. While many of these contributions are well understood locally, ILGA's comments suggest there may be value in ensuring they are clearly articulated when lodging applications.

The article also aligns with ongoing ClubsNSW advocacy encouraging balanced decision-making that recognises both harm minimisation objectives and the important social, economic and community role of registered clubs across NSW.
