Photography Tips to Elevate Your Club’s Brand
In a visually-driven world, strong photography isn’t just a nice-to-have – it’s a powerful tool to build and enhance your club’s brand.
Whether you’re showcasing your club’s dining or events, attracting new members or showing off your club’s community contributions, a high-quality image will help tell your story and showcase your impact.
First Impressions Matter
High-quality photos are often the first thing people will see – on your website, social media or any other collateral. They instantly communicate professionalism and credibility, and quite simply, it just looks good!
Showcasing Your Impact
Great photos of real people participating in your programs tell a powerful story. The right imagery adequately showcases the value of your club to the community, as well as allowing potential and current members to connect emotionally with your brand.
Boosting Online Engagement
Social media posts with strong visuals drives higher engagement – more likes, more comments, more shares. Don’t underestimate the impact of a singular, high-quality hero image rather than a graphic packed with too much information – let your caption do the talking! Higher social media engagement keeps your club engaged with your community and can drive more foot traffic to your venue. (After some more ways to improve your club’s social media? Building a Consistent Brand
The type of photography you use can reinforce your club’s identity. Whether it’s vibrant and energetic, calm and supportive, or sleek and luxurious, consistent visual storytelling builds trust and recognition. Think about the emotion and feel that you want to evoke, and align your imagery accordingly.
Good Photography Doesn’t Need to Break the Bank
There is no doubt that professional photography is a worthwhile investment – even a one-off, or perhaps annual photoshoot to capture some great images of your dining and activity offerings can provide a world of value in the long run. However, factors such as cost, availability and timing can mean it’s not always feasible to hire a pro.
Phone cameras have come a long way in recent years, and learning how to take incredible photos yourself on a mobile device can be a game-changer – it’s an accessible, low-cost way to level up your content.
Tips to Capture Great Photos on a Mobile Phone
Use natural light when possible
Natural light is the most ideal environment for capturing well-lit and clear images when possible. Bright, indirect sunlight is best – try and stay out of direct sun, as it can create unwanted shadows and result in some unflattering shots.
Keep an eye on the exposure
The exposure determines how bright your subject appears in the photo – over-exposure can make the subject look too bright and washed out, while under-exposure can result in a too-dark image. It’s easy to fix this on an iPhone – tap on your subject to focus, and once you see the yellow frame, drag to either increase or decrease the exposure until it’s just right.
Consider the composition
Framing is another thing to consider when taking your photos – it can make all the difference. If you’re using an iPhone, you can turn on the ‘grid’ feature to help you centre and align your subjects. Also, make sure to check the background of your image – try to minimise clutter such as unwanted objects or people. Experiment with different angles to see what works best for your subject! It’s also best to minimise using the zoom feature – it can minimise image quality. If you can, always favour cropping the image instead.
- Capture candids
Alongside posed images, try to capture organic, unposed moments as well! Candid shots can evoke a more genuine, authentic and ‘in-the-moment’ feel to your photographs.
- Edit thoughtfully
Try to focus on capturing the highest-quality image you can to start with, but even the best images sometimes need a little retouching magic. You can use the editing feature in your phone’s photo app, but there are also several free and effective tools you could use – Adobe Lightroom and Canva both have retouching tools you can use, housed within a free app, but if you have access to a paid program like Photoshop – even better! Try not to make any dramatic changes, as they can appear a bit obvious and over-edited. Focus on improving brightness, reducing unwanted shadows and adjusting the exposure.
Great photography helps your club stand out, tell your story and connect with your community. Whether you’re capturing iPhone pics, or investing in a professional shoot, a little effort goes a long way. By implementing these tips, you’re well on your way to building up your club’s brand.
Good luck and happy snapping!
