A Safe Bed When It’s Needed Most
Across Australia, one in two women are turned away from shelters when fleeing domestic and family violence, often because there simply isn’t a bed available.
Domestic and family violence is rooted in isolation and fear. Many women feel unable or too ashamed to reach out to family or friends for help, leaving safe accommodation as their only option.
It is also the leading cause of homelessness for women, making access to emergency shelter critical.
The DV Collective works with 75 women’s shelters nationwide, with a clear and urgent goal — to increase the number of beds so that every woman and child seeking safety can access a secure place to stay when they need it most.
Last year, the organisation delivered 81 additional beds to refuges across Australia. This year, the goal is even more ambitious — 500 new beds, ensuring fewer women and children are turned away during their most vulnerable moments.
No woman should ever be denied safety because there isn’t a bed available.
The 500 Beds campaign is a national fundraising and in‑kind donation initiative designed to expand the capacity of women’s refuges and shelters across Australia.
The aim is simple and urgent — to fund and deliver 500 new beds into existing shelters so women and children escaping domestic and family violence have a safe place to sleep, immediately.
This Mother’s Day, clubs and communities are invited to support the campaign in a simple but meaningful way — by purchasing a pair of socks for mum to help fund safe beds for women in need.
Clubs can also get involved by signing up as a Silly Sock Ambassador. The DV Collective will provide a box of 50 socks, along with access to a full marketing campaign including posters, social media tiles and digital signage, making it easy to get involved and spread the message.
