We are not against going cashless, we believe it’s an inevitable part of our future given the direction society is currently heading.
A lot of our new customers are already going cashless, so it’s really about how we get there and how we work with government, industry and suppliers to achieve this outcome.
My challenge to both parties is how are they going to test their theories going forward? How will they do the necessary tests and measure the outcomes? Our industry needs a constructive go-forward, so we can meet the needs of our community and our staff and deliver on the promise of a safe gaming environment.
Many of those designing the legislation have never worked in the industry. Therefore, some of the things they are mandating and legislating may not be practical.
I would say to both parties that the industry wants to work with you — and you will need to work with us to ensure our industry remains vibrant and healthy into the future, providing services, supporting communities and employing people.
Currently, our Club runs 84 per cent card-based play. If we are able to provide a digital option as well as cash, and we show people through our staff and education how those options allow them not only to play, but to protect themselves (and they can do it by choice), the likelihood is that we will have more on deck before any sign-up date.
