Bathurst RSL director Paul Hennessy has been awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM), as part of the recent Australia Day honours list.
“When I got the first call about being nominated that was just a shock,” says Paul.
“You do it for the help of the community — if I help someone, that’s my moral reward.
“What I love about it is that it’s an Australian award – it’s from the people of Australia. That’s pretty special.”
It’s been a big 12 months for Paul. In 2025 he was also named Central West Volunteer of the Year, celebrating more than 50 years of mentoring young people and supporting community initiatives — an award that also recognised his role as a Bathurst Living Legend.
While the accolades recognise decades of volunteer service through Scouts, his local church and community justice, Paul says his work as a director at Bathurst RSL has been central to that journey.
“I’ve learned so much and how important a role we play in the community,” he says of his tenure on Bathurst RSL’s Board.
“It’s great to be involved. I’m very humble that I can play a little part in that role.
“I’ve learned so much from [CEO] Peter [Sargent]… about leadership, about the important role we play in the community.”
Paul believes the philosophy that underpins both his volunteer work and his governance role at the Club is much the same.
“As a director, we’re giving back. Everything we do is for the benefit of the members,” he says.
“That’s why we do say that we are the heart of the community.”
